Smoke Detectors Credited With Saving Lives In Mattapan

BOSTON (CBS) — The Boston Fire Department is crediting working smoke detectors with getting more than two dozen people out of their apartment buildings in Mattapan Friday morning when a three-alarm fire started.

According to the Boston Fire Department’s Twitter account, they were called to 15 Woolson Street at 5:55 a.m. When crews got there fire could be seen on the top floor, and jumped to 19 Woolson Street.

People living in the homes were awoken by smoke detectors and all got out safely, according to officials. There were 21 adults and four children living in the buildings.

Fire investigators say the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in a bedroom on the third floor of 15 Woolson Street.

The Mayor’s Office and Red Cross are assisting the residents.
